WHAT IS

What does "smile design" mean?

Smile Design in Miami

The first thing that people ask when they hear that term so mentioned nowadays, is: “ What does smile design mean? ” At first it sounds interesting, but people, before opting for aesthetic procedures, always prefer to know what they consist of.

Also, if you live in The Magic City, you may also have wondered, “Is smile making done in Miami?” Let us answer all these questions.

When we talk about “smile design”, we are referring to a cosmetic dentistry procedure that can include the well-known veneers or tooth whitening but can go much further. It is called “smile design” (or Smile Makeover) to a combination of aesthetic procedures of dentistry and orthodontics, which aim to beautify the smile by changing the position, shape, size or the color of the teeth, although it can also include cosmetic surgery procedures on the lips or gums.

Smile design is not always done in the same way, because each denture will need some of the procedures mentioned and not the others. Some smile designs are extremely simple, while others are more complex and detailed. This is why smile design prices vary so much from person to person, clinic to clinic, and geographic region to geographic region.

When deciding which procedures are going to be applied to a specific smile design, the professional judgment of the dentist is important. However, as in any aesthetic treatment, the patient’s expectations are also very important. That’s why more than a few cosmetic dentists encourage patients to show them pictures of smiles they want theirs to look like. Tastes are so varied that sometimes it is preferable to resort to photographs because as they say, an image speaks more than a thousand words.

After the patient has determined how they want their smile to look, the dentist will decide what is needed, which procedures will be helpful, which should be left out, and to what extent smile design can achieve the patient’s expectations and dreams.

To achieve this, the dentist must not only start from the patient’s natural smile, but must also take into account very precisely the shapes of the patient’s face and features. In this way, and with the help of X-rays, computer design, and sometimes using tomography, it will be possible to make the new smile design look as close as possible to the natural one.

What is taken into account for a good smile design

Taking into account the shape of the patient’s face is extremely important to achieve the most natural smile design possible. The specialist in aesthetic dentistry knows that he must harmonize the new smile design with:

  • The circumference of the face.
  • The proportions of the face.
  • The degree of facial symmetry.
  • The color of skin and hair.
  • The space between the pupils.
  • The position and size of the cheekbones.
  • The position and size of the nose.
  • The thickness of the lips.
  • The size and color of the gums.
  • The natural interdental space of the patient.
  • The smile line (formed by the lower edge of the upper teeth).
  • The natural ratio between the size of the visible teeth (usually the upper 6 or 8 front teeth, to which you can add the lower 6 or 8 front teeth).
  • Among other features.

It is for everything listed in the points that we have just seen that, more than a single specialist, aesthetic dentistry may require an interdisciplinary group of professionals in the sector, such as an orthodontist (specialist in tooth correction), a periodontist (specialist in dental tissues such as the gums), an orthognathic (specialist in jaw surgery) and a maxillofacial (specialist in mouth, neck, and head).

COST

How much does a smile design in Miami cost?

Woman thinking about how much cost

As we already mentioned in the previous section, smile design is not always done in the same way. It will always be sought, in a rational manner, to provide the patient’s teeth with what they need to beautify, either in objective terms (that is, at the discretion of the aesthetic dentist), or according to the patient’s own expectations. That is why it is impossible to establish a priori price for smile design in Miami or anywhere else. However, let’s say estimated or average prices.

Smile design in Miami can cost from $3,500 (in the simplest cases) and $10,000 (in normal cases), up to $15,000 or $20,000 (in the most detailed and complex cases). As you can see, it is a fairly wide price range, although they are certainly not the highest in the USA. This price variability is due to the fact that, in certain cases, the smile design may require only teeth whitening, while in other cases it may involve some type of aesthetic surgical procedure.

Some dentists and clinics offer discounted packages, with payment options and advantages and with everything included (initial check-up, X-rays and photos, porcelain or composite veneers, bed in the clinic for observations if necessary, etc.). But you will have to find these offers yourself, researching the clinics, either physically or through their websites. Prices in these cases can drop considerably.

Aesthetic dentistry is never cheap, due to the professional level that specialists must achieve to perform this type of treatment, and also due to the price of the materials involved and the high technology of the facilities. Even so, you can see that smile design in Miami at a good price, which explains why many people travel from other states to Miami to have a smile design procedure. We will look this in more detail below.

Smile design: Price in USA

The price of a smile design in the USA ranges from $1,000 (in extremely simple cases, for example: a smile design that only requires teeth whitening), and $50,000 (in the most detailed and complex cases, such as those requiring dental implants or cosmetic surgery).

However, almost no one is in one of the two extremes that we have just mentioned, but in the middle ground. So it must be said that the average price of a smile design treatment in the USA, which is the one that is most frequently applied to most people, is between $10,000 and $20,000.

As we well know, there is a world of difference from one state to another in the USA. Each one is almost a country, each one is, more than a federal entity, a separate universe. That is why the figure that we have just given you as the cost of smile design in the entire United States is only a rough average. We urge you, if you are considering having a smile design, to inquire about the current price in the State in which you live or in which you will go to have the treatment.

Actually, the average price of smile design in the United States can be very far from the cost of each State, both in the sense that it costs less and that it costs more. That is why, as we said above, not simply a few patients consider the possibility of traveling from one state to another to have a smile design done. Even despite the costs of travel, accommodation, etc., the smile design procedure can be cheaper.

Due to what we have just said, some patients frequently travel to get a smile design in Miami. If you check the information online, you may even find several testimonials from patients who have made this journey with good results both in aesthetic and economic terms.

CANDIDATE

Who is a good candidate for porcelain veneers?

A patient smiles at her dentist during a treatment at the smile design Miami clinic.

Porcelain veneers are often a recurring element in smile designs. Basically, almost everyone is a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Even if there are some deficiencies in the patient’s teeth that are relatively incompatible with porcelain veneers, the person can correct them for a while and then be able to use porcelain veneers.

Really, few people have any dental characteristic that prevents them from using porcelain dental veneers. But this does not mean that these people cannot have a smile design, but rather that they must resort to other types of procedures to achieve it. If this is your case, your dentist will tell you how to proceed. So, to use porcelain dental veneers, you have to:

Veneers are basically an aesthetic procedure, although they are also functional, since they allow you to correct your bite and chew better. This means that porcelain veneers are used to cover what is considered unaesthetic in the teeth. However, they should not be used to correct or mask dental problems that are not merely cosmetic. That is, using porcelain veneers is convenient to have healthy teeth. If there are cavities or other problems of infection or accumulation of tartar and plaque both in the teeth and in the gums, they must be corrected before placing porcelain veneers on the teeth.

Patients who have good oral hygiene habits will not only have a better smile beforehand but will also be better candidates for a smile design. On the other hand, poor oral hygiene habits cause conditions in the teeth and gums that can prevent a smile design from being possible.

In order to use porcelain veneers, one of the basic conditions is to have good tooth enamel. This may sound paradoxical since porcelain dental veneers are precisely a resource to compensate for tooth enamel problems. However, the truth is that veneers are also attached to the enamel, and in certain conditions, it is not convenient to fit them.

There are people who do not have enough enamel on their teeth, and there are even people who do not have tooth enamel at all (this is called dental hypoplasia or the natural absence of enamel). When these things happen, there is nowhere to hold the veneers, and the person, assisted by their dentist, must resort to other types of aesthetic treatments to achieve a smile design.

There are substances that tend to damage natural teeth, and this is also true for artificial teeth and porcelain and other types of veneers. Nicotine and alcohol are known to be two of the substances that most destroy teeth in terms of staining and wear. It must be said that this same effect has on porcelain veneers. If you smoke or consume alcohol regularly, before getting porcelain veneers you better consider giving up both habits, or you will be throwing money into a bottomless pit.

While it is true that nicotine, alcohol and other substances (such as strong food dyes or foods with a lot of fat or sugar) have less unsightly effect on porcelain veneers than on resin or composite veneers, that does not mean that they do not affect them in any way.

From childhood we all tend to learn that natural teeth break when the denture is misused, that is, when unnecessary bites are made to improper or too hard materials. The same thing happens with veneers. If veneers are to be used or are being considered, teeth should not be used as “tools” to open wrappers or packages, straighten metals, split plastics, etc.

Even other uses of teeth that, without having to do with “tools”, are just as harmful are considered improper. We refer to onychophagia (biting your nails), bruxism (clenching or grinding one jaw with the other), clashing your teeth out of anxiety or anger, etc. All those habits must be abandoned because they can crack the porcelain veneers.

It is almost always said that dental veneers are suitable for all ages. This is true, but a clarification needs to be made. In the case of children under the age of 7, who still have the so-called “baby teeth” (deciduous dentition), they are not considered good candidates for porcelain veneers.

If trauma such as accidental tooth fractures occur at that age, composite or resin veneers are normally used to correct them rather than porcelain veneers. In this way, it is hoped that the problem will correct itself when the child’s permanent dentition or second dentition is born, the first phase of which occurs naturally between the ages of 7 and 11.

The duration of the smile design process

Porcelain Veneers Miami

Not all smile designs are achieved at the same time. The duration of the smile design process depends on both the patient’s expectations and the dental procedures chosen by the specialist to meet those expectations.

For example, the type of smile design chosen by the patient may require a simple chemical whitening of teeth, with a splint, with laser or LED light, or a slight orthodontic correction, for which they will have to use braces or appliances for a certain time. However, dental correction can be more extensive and complex, because it depends on the current state of the patient’s teeth.

Something else to comment on is that to apply veneers it will first be necessary to cure any cavities or dental deterioration in the patient. All this will be part of the smile design price process, and will have some cost.
